PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Two  Mid-Week  Studies

Two Mid-Week studies provide opportunities to learn and grow in faith. These are open to anyone so come and invite your neighbors, friends, business associates, etc. Both studies are led by Richard, our Interim Pastor, and are held in the upstairs Adult Educational hall.

Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.  ASG (Adult Study Group) What Do others Believe? Christianity’s Family Tree looks at what other Christians believe and why. We will conclude this series by looking at Methodists.

Then we begin a new series using a thought provoking and helpful book. It is Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt, with the humorous but accurate sub-title: “A Theological Survival Course for Youth, Parents, and Other Confused Presbyterians.” The book explores many of the common theological notions found in the surrounding religious culture and how Presbyterians view these areas. To give you a hint, some of the chapter titles are:

“Are You Saved, or Are You a Presbyterian?”

“Are You Going to Heaven, or to Tulsa?”

“When Will the World End, or Did It End in the 1960’s?”

Thursdays from 12:00 – 1:15 - BB&B(Brown Bag & Bible) – Bring your own lunch and join us. We are engaged in a study of the fascinating story of the spread of the way of Christ as recorded in the book of Acts, sometimes referred to as Volume 2 of Luke. We hope some of you who work can take an extended lunch break and join us.

Odyssey

Odyssey is an adult Christian social group that strengthens our church community by getting to know each other better through fun and fellowship.  We are open to adults of all ages.  We are committed to planning activities for daytime, evenings and weekends in order to include those persons who work and/or have other time conflicts.  We strive to plan varied activities that will appeal to the various interests in the group.

Every month on the “First Friday”, we get together and play games from 1 – 4 PM in the Pastors’ Hall.  The games we play, Sequence, Dominoes, Rummikub, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Pictionary, Bridge, etc. are played for fun, learning and fellowship.  We add and subtract players from some games as people come and go in the afternoon and as games finish and start again. We take time to talk and enjoy being with each other.  If you would like to play a more competitive game, please feel free to bring your game and come with your table of players pre-arranged.  Tables will be set up and there is room for everyone.  Bring a friend.  Bring your favorite game and snack.  For questions about First Friday Games Day, call the church office at 882-2505.

We take day trips and got out in the evenings.  We want to plan an extended trip by the end of the year.  We have created a list of many activities and trip options for future reference. We have established a contact with a trip planner, who is available to assist us with more extensive outings that require bus transportation and more complicated travel arrangements.

Our monthly activities and trips are detailed in the monthly newsletter (see link on this web site) and the weekly church bulletins.  We hope that you will join this group in its extended journey toward getting to know each other better through fun and fellowship.  Please keep this ministry in your prayers and give us your input by stopping by the church office and/or talking with/emailing Rev. Richard Caldwell rcaldwellspc@bellsouth.net and/or Judy White at judywhite@aol.com or calling the church office at 882-2505.

Thursday Night at the Movies

Join us on the fourth Thursday night of each month as we watch a movie and then discuss it. Movies are not only entertaining, but provide significant content for discussion and reflection about life, values and our faith. We meet at 6:30 p.m. Films chosen will be suitable for viewing in the church, but will also be chosen because of the issues and perspectives they raise, not just for entertainment. Eat before you come or bring your dinner with you and eat during the movie. Popcorn and ice water will be provided. Following the movie we will spend some time discussing the film. Each month’s film will be in the current newsletter or by calling the church office at 864-882-2505.

Presbyterian Women

Any and all women are invited to become part of a small group, called Circles, that meet each month for Bible study, service and fellowship. The church currently has three circles and there is always room for new people. The circles usually meet the first week of each month. The specific times and locations may be found in the current newsletter or by calling the church office.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES OF SENECA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The following are some, but not all, of the outreach ministries in which this congregation and its members are involved. In addition, many members of our congregation are involved in a host of other community ministries, such as Habitat for Humanity (building decent housing for people) and Safe Harbor (a temporary shelter for abused women and children).

You can obtain more information on the programs below by emailing the church office, or calling 864-882-2505.

Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund – Working with other Presbyterian churches in Oconee County, the Service Fund provides assistance with shelter, utilities, food and other basic needs for people in need. It is run entirely by volunteers and is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings and operates out of the Chapter House at the north east corner of Oak Street and South First Street. All overhead costs are provided by Seneca Presbyterian Church and volunteers. 100% of donations go directly to those in need.

Good Samaritan Fund – This is a discretionary fund used by the pastor of this congregation to help members and non-members alike who are in need of assistance. It works separately from but in conjunction with the Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund.

Our Daily Rest – A new homeless shelter is being built in 2008-2009 to provide temporary housing for women and children as well as men. The program is designed to help people deal with the reasons for their homelessness and get back on their feet. The church helps financially and also has members serving on the Board.

Our Daily Bread – This is an interdenominational ministry providing daily lunch to those in need, Monday-Friday. Our church helps through financial donations as well as members serving on the Board.

Medical Mission Support – Our congregation helps support Dr. Barbara Nagy, a pediatric missionary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) currently serving in Malawi.

Denominational Offerings –  Our congregation collects special offerings for ministries of our presbytery and denomination. Among these are: One Great Hour of Sharing, Presbyterian Retirement Communities of South Carolina, Thornwell Home for Children, and the Joy Gift to help retired servants of the church as well as racial-ethnic students in colleges.

Knitters – This team makes various knitted objects for hospitals and people in need.

The church’s ministry also includes using our facilities to serve outside groups who provide various forms of ministries and benefits to people in the community. Among these are AA, Al-Anon, and OLLI, which is an extension of Clemson University that offers adult life-long learning classes.
