PROGRAMS & MINISTRIES . . .

Two Mid-Week studiesprovide opportunities to learn and grow in faith. These are open to anyone so please join us and invite your neighbors and friends. Come to the upstairs Adult Educational hall, or check by the church office for directions. In order to accommodate a variety of schedules, one group meets during the day and the other meets in the evening.

ASG (Adult Study Group)
Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
This group of evening students gathers weekly to learn from outstanding writers and thinkers in the areas of biblical studies, theology, spirituality, and ethics. The format consists of learning from an “expert,” through print or video resources, and then opening the floor for discussion, interpretation, and significant sharing.

Current Study:
An Introduction to the Old Testament (video lecture series) by Amy Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University

Past Studies Include:
What’s So Amazing about Grace? by Philip Yancey
Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt (topics in theology viewed from the Presbyterian/Reformed faith perspective)
Christianity’s Family Tree (What do others believe?)

Brown Bag & Bible (otherwise known as BB&B)
Thursdays from 12:00 – 1:15
This weekly Bible study is facilitated by our pastor, Nancy Morris, and invites participants to savor lunch (but bring your own!), God’s Word, and one another. We choose a book of the Bible to study and then take our time as we do, often taking a year to complete the study of one biblical book. With Bibles open before us, we read a portion and then share questions and insights. Everyone is free to join in the discussion. We also take time to hear concerns and share prayer together. You may join us at any time.

Current Study:
The Gospel According to Matthew

Past Studies Include:
The Gospel According to Luke
The Acts of the Apostles

Odyssey is an adult Christian social group that strengthens our church community by getting to know each other better through fun and fellowship.  We are open to adults of all ages.  We are committed to planning activities for daytime, evenings and weekends in order to include those persons who work and/or have other time conflicts.  We strive to plan varied activities that will appeal to the various interests in the group.

First Friday, we get together and play games from 1 – 4 PM in the Forus Room, downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  The games we play, Sequence, Dominoes, Rummikub, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Pictionary, Bridge, etc. are played for fun, learning and fellowship.  We add and subtract players from some games as people come and go in the afternoon and as games finish and start again. We take time to talk and enjoy being with each other.  If you would like to play a more competitive game, please feel free to bring your game and come with your table of players pre-arranged.  Tables will be set up and there is room for everyone.  Bring a friend.  Bring your favorite game and snack.  For questions about First Friday Games Day, call the church office at 882-2505.

Our monthly activities and trips are detailed in the monthly newsletter (see link on this web site) and the weekly church bulletins.  We hope that you will join this group in its extended journey toward getting to know each other better through fun and fellowship.  Please keep this ministry in your prayers and give us your input by stopping by the church office and/or talking with/emailing Judy White at judywhite@aol.com, Lin Akroyd at lqa1566@charter.net or calling the church office at 882-2505.

Thursday Night at the Movies
Fourth Thursdays, 6:30 p.m.
Pastors’ Hall

Movies are not only entertaining. They provide significant content for reflection about life, values and our faith. We choose films that are suitable for viewing in the church and come from the recent or not so recent past. We look for ones that challenge our thinking and offer us experiences we could not otherwise have. Very few are what you would call “religious” movies, yet they all deepen our understanding of what it means to be God’s children in God’s world.

Bring your lawn chair (it’s more comfortable that way) and join us as we watch a movie and then discuss it. We use a video projector to get a big image and always turn on the subtitles so we don’t miss any of the dialogue.

Eat before you come or bring your dinner with you and eat during the movie. Popcorn and ice water will be provided. Following the movie we will spend some time discussing the film. Each month’s film will be in the current newsletter or by calling the church office at 864-882-2505. Feel free to offer your own suggestions, too.

Young Adult Group—We meet at 6:30 pm on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month for games, movies, etc. in the youth room below the fellowship hall.  Everybody brings food to share. Come join us!  For more info, contact Melissa Krabbe Melissa@krabbe.com or check us out on Facebook.

Ladies, join a circle and you can have fun socializing while serving your fellow Christians. Seneca Presbyterian Women has three circles, two of which meet in the morning and one that meets at night. We meet monthly, during the fall, winter and spring. You need not be a member of the church to join a circle. To learn more about our church, come to a circle meeting. We look forward to seeing you in a group. For more information, contact Helen Kelly: helenhkelly@yahoo.com or (864) 650-0342.

Outreach Ministries Of Seneca Presbyterian Church

The following are some, but not all, of the outreach ministries in which this congregation and its members are involved. In addition, many members of our congregation are involved in a host of other community ministries, such as Habitat for Humanity (building decent housing for people) and Safe Harbor (a temporary shelter for abused women and children).

You can obtain more information on the programs below by emailing the church office, or calling 864-882-2505.

Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund – Working with other Presbyterian churches in Oconee County, the Service Fund provides assistance with shelter, utilities, food and other basic needs for people in need. It is run entirely by volunteers and is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings and operates out of the Chapter House at the north east corner of Oak Street and South First Street. All overhead costs are provided by Seneca Presbyterian Church and volunteers. 100% of donations go directly to those in need.

Good Samaritan Fund – This is a discretionary fund used by the pastor of this congregation to help members and non-members alike who are in need of assistance. It works separately from but in conjunction with the Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund.

Our Daily Rest – A new homeless shelter is being built in 2008-2009 to provide temporary housing for women and children as well as men. The program is designed to help people deal with the reasons for their homelessness and get back on their feet. The church helps financially and also has members serving on the Board.

Our Daily Bread – This is an interdenominational ministry providing daily lunch to those in need, Monday-Friday. Our church helps through financial donations as well as members serving on the Board.

Gopher Program – Working with United Way, members of this congregation provide transportation and errands for those in need.

Middle School Mentoring -  Members of this church join with those form other churches in serving at Seneca Middle School to help students with their studies.

Medical Mission Support – Our congregation helps support Dr. Barbara Nagy, a pediatric missionary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) currently serving in Malawi.

Denominational Offerings –  Our congregation collects special offerings for ministries of our presbytery and denomination. Among these are: One Great Hour of Sharing, Presbyterian Retirement Communities of South Carolina, Thornwell Home for Children, and the Joy Gift to help retired servants of the church as well as racial-ethnic students in colleges.

Knitters – This team makes various knitted objects for hospitals and people in need.

The church’s ministry also includes using our facilities to serve outside groups who provide various forms of ministries and benefits to people in the community. Among these are AA, Al-Anon, and OLLI, which is an extension of Clemson University that offers adult life-long learning classes.
